Braga witnessed the rise of the Roman Empire and Arab rule. Its symbol is the oldest cathedral in Portugal, whose construction began in 1071. In the city center, the Santa Barbara Gardens, located in the courtyard of the Episcopal Palace, founded in the 17th century, delight residents daily with their beauty and vibrant color palette. While sipping coffee in Praça da República, you can soak up the atmosphere and observe the leisurely lifestyle of the locals.

A significant highlight of exploring Braga is a visit to the grand Bom Jesus pilgrimage center in the suburbs. This complex is a true gem of Portuguese Baroque and Neoclassical architecture and boasts one of the best views in the area. The sanctuary is based on the Gospels and features a multi-tiered staircase symbolizing the road to Calvary.

You'll also have the opportunity to bathe in the Fountains of Emotions and Benefactors. You can reach the mountain's summit on the world's oldest operating hydro-aerobatic cable car, but we recommend ascending on foot, as this is the only way to fully appreciate the beauty of this place.

The next city, Guimarães, leads the way to Portuguese statehood.

The city's symbol is its medieval fortress, which served as the residence of the rulers of the County of Portucalém from the 9th to the 12th centuries. Another witness to past historical events is the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a site included in the list of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. In the Chapel of San Miguel, you can touch the baptismal font where Portugal's first king was baptized. The gardens of the Brazilian Republic complete the city's architectural ensemble.
