Amarante is a medieval town in northern Portugal. Situated on the Tâmega River, the town is dominated by a 13th-century church and monastery and is famous for being the home of São Gonçalo, a Benedictine monk and Portugal's answer to Saint Valentine. Visitors explore the historic town center with its stone bridge and enjoy the charming countryside nearby.
Amarante's sweets and pastries are extremely famous and can be found in many pastry shops and cafes throughout the region. Remember some of the names and be sure to try them for yourself. São Gonçalo cakes.
On the first Saturday of June, the feast of Saint Gonzalo is celebrated, which is much sought after by old maids looking for a husband.
The Douro Valley is a landscape of unique beauty. Portugal is renowned not only for its architecture and history, but also for its rapidly growing wine tourism, offering the opportunity to sample exquisite wines and aromatic port wines. The region's stunning landscapes are truly captivating. Here, everything exists in harmony: human labor and the earth's natural resources, generously bestowed upon talented and hardworking people by God. In 2001, the Alto Douro wine region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is in this region that the world-famous "Port" wine, commonly known as "Port," is produced. We will visit one of these farms and sample dry DOC wines and aromatic port wines of various ages, followed by lunch, driving along the river between picturesque hills carpeted with vineyards.
Near the town of Lamego, you'll enjoy lunch at the private estate of Countess Donna Maria Manuel. The Countess's home is a veritable 18th-century museum. The eighth-generation owners welcome guests with open arms. You'll sample homemade dishes typical of the region. After lunch, you can stroll through the garden, explore the vineyards surrounding the estate, and enjoy the beautiful scenery and the enchanting sounds of birdsong.
